![]() ![]() Now, it's possible a couple things have happened.ġ) the transformer blowing fried the doorbell completely. I know you said two months, so it was surely stressing the battery, but the transformer failing may have done other damage. But on an undersized power supply, it can go bad in 12-24 months, depending on how under-powered the transformer is, and 10VA is quite under-powered. So it could take 5-10 years to accumulate enough wear for it to go bad, barring environmental factors. One charge cycle of that battery should normally take a month or more, even if the doorbell button is being pressed 20 times a day. ![]() This causes the battery to essentially go through one charge cycle each day, which wears out the battery much faster. This is not the intended usage for the battery, and why it's so small. So the battery is having to make up for the power it can't get from the transformer, and then when it's idle during the day, the battery charges up. When the power supply is undersized, at night when the IR is on, or when transmitting (especially when doing both), it uses a lot more power than when idle. ![]() That battery is intended only to power the unit briefly as it has to disconnect from power when closing the circuit to ring a mechanical chime. Unfortunately, running on an undersized transformer will cause it to rely very heavily on the tiny 400mAh battery inside.
